Cleaning Up Our Backyard... and Street... and Park...
Saturday is Earth Day. Sometimes we need an excuse or a reason to do ‘our little bit’ to beautify the places where we live. Earth Day is as good a reason as any.
Can you take 20 minutes out of your day on Saturday to clean up your neighbourhood? There’s no doubt that the recent windy days have blown garbage and recycling debris in and around our yards. Couple that with people who carelessly and thoughtlessly litter on our streets and in our parks and very quickly we have an unsightly mess!
So I encourage all residents in the Ward, whether as individuals or families or even getting together as neighbours, to get out and do a good thing for our community. Let’s clean up; together, we can get a lot done with minimal effort.
While on the topic of garbage/recycling and keeping things clean, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- • if it’s windy outside the night before your garbage collection, consider putting your recycling out the next morning or put heavier items on top of your bin to keep the lighter items from blowing away.
• if the wind has blown around some of your or your neighbours’ recycling items, please be a good citizen and pick them up!
• if you have more Blue Box items than your recycling boxes can handle, place the additional items in a transparent (clear or tinted blue) plastic bag. Place the bag on top of, or beside, your recycling boxes.
• if you have more garbage than the two-bag limit allows, mark your extra bag(s) with a garbage tag available for $5 for 5 tags at any of the locations listed on this web page; without the tag, your extra bag(s) will not be picked up.
• do NOT place your garbage in community garbage cans at your park or shopping plaza. City staff are able to determine who is engaging in this activity and offenders can face significant fines.
There are plenty more tips and information available at the Peel Region website.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our community beautiful.
