Practise Safe Walking

We have already seen a number of pedestrian deaths in the GTA in 2010, and the year has only just begun. And quite frankly…. one death is one too many!

We all know Mississauga is a wonderful city to walk around; the sights and sounds at times can be intoxicating. But when it comes to crossing the streets pedestrians need to be alert. When you are walking next to or crossing streets you have to remember to be responsible for your actions.

It's not okay to walk across the middle of the street, in fact, it's deadly. We, as a city, installed countdown timers at intersections to give pedestrians an idea of how long they have to cross the street. We have also installed zebra stripes at intersections, audible signals at intersections and pedestrian-controlled signals. These traffic safety measures are important to respect along with the flashing "do not walk" hand signals.

Using the lights and crossing areas are the only ways you should be crossing the street. It ensures your safety and the safety of others. Pedestrians have the same responsibility as motorists to follow the rules of the road and not compromise their safety, no matter who has the right of way.

As a City, we have been very proactive in taking action to improve pedestrian safety and to educate pedestrians and motorists on how to protect themselves. We have also implemented many physical methods to enhance pedestrian safety.

But the responsibility for safety is not just on the pedestrian; drivers must be also be alert at all times and should always expect the unexpected. A split second of distraction could end in tragedy.

The City can install more signals, more stop signs and paint more stripes, but until everyone starts getting the message to be alert, behind the wheel or on foot, we will continue to see these tragedies play out in our city… and we don’t want that! So take the time to be safe, expect the unexpected and pay attention to what you are doing.

The second you don't may be your last.
