Signs, signs, everywhere signs

With the spring thaw upon us, we can soon expect to see the grass turn greener, the trees begin to bud and many beautiful things sprout out of the ground.

Signs, however, are not some of those beautiful things.

It seems that once that last bit of snow melts, some local business owners want to advertise their products and services by posting signs along the streets of our fair city. This action contravenes a city bylaw put into effect in order to keep our landscape beautiful. In other words, it’s illegal.

We don’t want all this clutter and visual garbage in our neighbourhoods!  While small businesses are important to our community and city, owners must use the proper channels to advertise their wares. Commercial signs placed on public property along streets, at intersections, or posted to utility poles or street signs (also a safety concern) are illegal and the owners of these businesses can face fines for erecting them. The same is true for flyers, magnets and other promotional materials posted to the super mailboxes in our neighbourhoods.

While election signs have their own set of bylaws, they, too, may only be erected on private property with the owner’s prior consent.

As residents, we can all do our part to help keep our community clean and looking its best. You can register with the City as an "ambassador" to remove illegal signs in your area. Call 905-896-5511 to sign up or get more information.

Let’s keep Ward 10 beautiful!
