The major capital construction project to widen Ninth Line from Eglinton Avenue to Derry Road begins.
Early Work
- Installation of noise walls – October 2025 — Construction Notice; Locations
- Relocation of hydro poles – Late 2025
Construction Contract
- Tender – November 2025
- Award – January 2026
- Schedule – to be determined, anticipated to begin Spring 2026 at Eglinton Avenue and conclude late 2027 at Derry Road
The detailed design for the new roadway configuration largely follows the environmental assessment approved in 2021 and will include two travel lanes in each direction separated by raised medians or centre left turn lanes. A protected cycle track and distinct sidewalk will be constructed on both sides of the newly widened road. New traffic signals are planned for Sunlight Street/Mahoney Gate, Tacc Drive, McDowell Drive and Beacham Street. Once complete, a new Miway transit route is expected to service the length of Ninth Line.
Work will begin in the south near Eglinton Avenue and progress northerly to Derry Road. It is a major capital project expected to take at least 18 months. There will be dust and noise, road and lane closures, and other traffic impacts and these will be communicated in advance of the related work as much as possible. In general, residents and commuters are encouraged to plan for delays and/or consider alternate routes where possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The City is grateful to the Ontario government who has provided $10 million in grant funding for this project.
