A Mississauga Ward 10 resident has a number of flood prevention programs and rebates that could be beneficial in mitigating the impact of flooding on their private property and in their basements. These include:
- Foundation Drain Collector Sump Pump Subsidy
- Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate Program
- Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant
- “Build Back Better” Flood Resilience Rebate

Foundation Drain Collector Sump Pump Subsidy
Currently, this subsidy is available only to Ward 10 residents who are serviced by the Foundation Drain Collector system. A map showing the approximate extent of the FDC in Ward 10 is available here. If you’re close to the edge of the marked area, be sure to check with City staff on your eligibility by calling 311 prior to having any work done.
- Value: 100% of the invoiced costs related to installation of a sump pump up to a maximum of $6,000
- Eligibility: serviced by FDC, installed by plumber licenced in Mississauga
A building permit is not required, however, you have the option to obtain a permit if you would like to have the completed work inspected by a City building inspector to ensure proper installation. Find out more here.
The work must be completed by a plumber licenced with the City of Mississauga. A complete list of licenced plumbers (as of October 2) is available here.
Once the work is done, fill in the application and submit it. Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks and a cheque will be issued to reimburse the costs up to $6,000.
All the details and application form are available here.
This program is under review and being expanded with changes expected to be ready by February 2025.
- New name: Basement Flood Prevention Program
- Available citywide
- Additional flood prevention devices to be included, such as disconnection of downspout, weeping tile
- Overall value increased to $6,800 (but rebates may still be applied individually to specific devices so sump pump max may remain at $6,000)
- Renewable after 10 years to account for life-cycle replacement of equipment
The revised program will be retroactive to July 16, 2024 so there is no need for Ward 10 residents eligible under the current program to wait for the new program to have this work done or apply for the subsidy. Any difference in the value of the subsidy would apply (perhaps in a second payment) for work done after July 16, 2024.
Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate Program
This rebate, through the Region of Peel, helps to cover the cost of installation of a backwater valve on the private side sanitary sewer. This program has been changed per my motion as of September 12, 2024 as follows:
- Value increased to 60% of invoiced costs related to installation up to a maximum of $1,500.
- Renewable after 10 years to account for life-cycle replacement of equipment
- Review of application process to streamline and expedite
A building permit is required through the City of Mississauga so that an inspection takes place to ensure proper installation. The permit process typically takes between 6-10 business days from date of submission to approval.
The application form indicates that only those who experienced flooding are eligible; however if you live in a community that has been flooded, you will very likely be approved. Please call the Region first to be sure: 905-791-7800 x4409.
Once the work is completed, fill out the application form and submit to the Region of Peel. Processing and issuance of rebate cheque follows in 6-8 weeks.
The recent changes to the program are retroactive to July 16, 2024. The information on the Peel Region website has been updated with the changes and the new application form is available.
Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant — now open!
NEW! Taken from recommendations found in my motion and approved by Council at its September 25 meeting, this grant provides Mississauga residents up to $1,000 to those who experienced flooding on July 16, 2024 or August 17, 2024.
Applications for the grant opened on December 2, 2024 and will close May 31, 2025 or at the point when the fund is exhausted. With a limit of 3,000 properties eligible, please do not wait to apply for this grant.
All the details, eligibility requirements and application form are available here.
Build Back Better Flood Resilience Rebate
NEW! Based on my motion and approved by Council at its September 25 meeting, this rebate aims at encouraging residents to choose flood-resistant materials when restoring their basements following a flood by providing 50% rebate of the invoiced costs up to a maximum of $3,000. The program would be retroactive to July 16, 2024.
The details, eligibility requirements, terms and conditions and funding source are still being established by City staff. As residents are currently in the process of rebuilding their basements, I am asking staff to work quickly to determine the parameters around what will be included in terms of materials, etc.
